Digital Agenda for SMEs: towards simplification, enhanced cross-border trade and diversified access to finance but further legal clarity and awareness raising are needed

Brussels, 6 October 2011 - The digital agenda can help small enterprises take full advantage of the opportunities available in the Digital single market and be able to compete with international players. It is however crucial to raise further awareness of its benefits as its potential is still largely unexploited by this category of users. These were the conclusions of a roundtable on the benefits of the Digital agenda held in Brussels yesterday.

EHFG 2011: Personalised medecine could help to save 100 billion euros in annual health care costs

Despite huge increases in spending over the last three decades, progress in dealing with the most frequent and burdensome diseases is appalling. The EU Flagship Pilot IT Future of Medicine (ITFoM) could remedy that, experts said at the European Health Forum  Gastein. The flagship‘s investments of 1 billion euros in the course of the next decade are expected to save up to 100 billion euros per year in health expenditures in the future.

Intelligent control: innovative health financing models

Despite increasing demand, potential health care funding is limited, experts warned at the European Health Forum Gastein (EHFG). So it is that much more imperative that national health policies be able to intelligently apply  control-oriented criteria in order to optimise services and to make better use of existing  resources.

Europe's taxi tested: alarming results

Expensive detours of up to 213 percent compared to the most direct route, speed violations exceeding the limit by up to 42km/h (in the city!), red light violations, aggressive driving, drivers swearing about traffic and complaining about passengers using taxis for short trips. These are only some of the shortcomings observed by EuroTest inspectors who tested taxi journeys across 22 major cities in Europe.

Portuguese farmers call for more innovative agricultural technologies to remain competitive, environmentally-friendly

Brussels and Lisbon, 6 October 2011
Portuguese farmers have grown nearly 60% more genetically modified (GM) maize this year compared to last year, an increase of almost 3,000 ha to a total of 7,843 ha in 2011.  This impressive growth highlights the need for more innovative agricultural technologies in the European Union (EU). Compared to North and South America, Asia, and, increasingly, Africa, the EU has approved far fewer GM products, which directly affects farmers’ competitiveness.

The ticking bomb of hazardous chemicals in consumer products

ANEC calls on the European Union to wake up to the ticking bomb of hazardous chemicals in consumer products. At the moment, there is little – if any – regulation of these chemicals at European level, be it in childcare articles, electrical and electronic equipment or construction products. The regulations that do exist are vague or have so many exemptions that the result is the same: consumers continue to be exposed to hazardous chemicals in everyday articles.

Eurometaux welcomes the EP ENVI Committee 2nd reading vote on “recast proposals for the Waste Electric & Electronic Equipment Directive”

Eurometaux welcomes the EP ENVI Committee’s recognition of the importance of WEEE as a secondary source for critical raw materials as expressed through the vote on 4 October in second reading of the report prepared by MEP Florenz on the recast of the Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) Directive.

Eurometaux believes that the strong incentives for Member States to collect all WEEE separately and the ambitious collection target to be achieved at Member State level will contribute to increased recycling of WEEE in Europe.
