Croatia deserves to have its efforts rewarded in June. Bernd Posselt MEP

"The European Parliament today voted on the Swoboda Report on Croatia, in which it supports this June 2011 as the target date to conclude accession negotiations. This wording was based on amendments tabled by EPP Group Spokesman on Croatia, Bernd Posselt MEP, in the Foreign Affairs Committee, and defended by a majority of the European Parliament against efforts of the Green Group to delete this date.

Time to defuse the Pensions time-bomb

Today the European Parliament in Strasbourg debated the European Commission's green paper on adequate, sustainable and safe European pensions systems.  While the Commission Strategy does not make any specific policy proposals, it seeks a view on possible future actions at a European level.

Latest attack on pensions "unnecessary and unacceptable"

After today's European Parliament vote on a report on European pension systems, GUE/NGL MEP Ilda Figueiredo set out the left's opposition to increases in retirement ages and the notion of European integration built on the basis of anti-social policies.

GUE/NGL will not back EU 2020's anti-social policies

During this morning's Parliamentary debate on the Union's 2020 strategy, GUE/NGL President Lothar Bisky (Germany) was critical of the strategy saying "clearly it had not come up with solutions for people in the throes of crisis, quite the opposite. Instead, these are the same kind of policies that have contributed to this crisis", he said.

Putting patients first: Framework Directive on counterfeit drugs approved today

Failure is not an option: It’s time to move ahead with an EU-wide FTT

Speaking after the voting through of her report on fake medicines, EP rapporteur Marisa Matias (GUE/NGL, Portugal) said:

"Make no mistake, counterfeit medicines are a threat to patient safety including those suffering from cancer, heart disease, cholesterol and diabetes. Pharmaceutical counterfeiting is not just another type of counterfeiting, it is dramatically different; it is an organised crime that causes death and seriously jeopardises people's confidence in the entire health system."

Failure is not an option: It’s time to move ahead with an EU-wide FTT

As European citizens foot the bill for the financial crisis, Socialist members from the European Parliament argue that a refusal to move forward with an EU-wide Financial Transaction Tax (FTT) would be “irresponsible”.

“As government’s push through tough austerity measures, the EU must not shy away from its responsibility to its citizens, who are being forced to cover the cost of the financial crisis,” says Udo Bullmann, S&D economic affairs coordinator.

"The EU needs to take immediate measures to show true solidarity with Southern Member States", said Simon Busuttil MEP, EPP Group Coordinator in the Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs (LIBE) Committee of the European Parliament, during the plenary debate on the humanitarian emergency that has been caused by the massive migratory flows from Tunisia to the Italian island of Lampedusa.

Roma Strategy: Overwhelming support for the European Roma Strategy. Lívia Járóka MEP

"The social inclusion of the Roma is one of the most important strategic challenges that Europe faces and at the same time it provides one of the most promising opportunities for the continent", said Lívia Járóka MEP, Rapporteur of the EU Strategy on Roma Inclusion. Late last night, the Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs Committee (LIBE) of the European Parliament adopted Lívia Járóka's Report with an overwhelming majority.

Ayman Nour calls for three key changes ahead of Egyptian elections

Today the ALDE Group spoke to Dr. Ayman Nour, one of the leading Egyptian opposition politicians and former Presidential candidate, during a live video conference in which Nour expressed his  hopes and fears on the future of Egypt.

"Change has to happen now, there is a sense of hope and a collective wish for change but three key issues have to be urgently addressed:

Package deal on bus passenger rights disappointing

The European Parliament today backed a compromise creating a European set of rights for bus passengers. However, whilst a step in the right direction, the regulation is limited in scope and leaves many travellers out in the cold. The Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe (ALDE) that had pushed for a truly EU-wide package of bus passenger rights withheld their support from the EPP-S&D deal.
