Europe and global food security‘Special Week’ coverage

EurActiv, the independent media portal specialised in EU policies, will be running special coverage on Europe’s role in global food security from 23-27 November.

In the wake of the recent food price crisis in 2007-2008, the United Nations has warned that prices remain "stubbornly high in developing countries". It expects the number of hungry people in the world to increase to over one billion this year. The global economic crisis is further aggravating the situation by causing job losses and deepening poverty.

A gradual recovery after a severe recession

A gradual, but modest, recovery is expected in 2010 for the European engineering industry after the most severe contraction in 2009 since the 1970s. The volume of production is expected to fall by as much as 20% in 2009. Since financial markets are not yet functioning properly and capacity utilisation is at a record low, demand for investment goods, which represent 80% of the output of Orgalime industries will remain low. The volume of production at the level of EU 27 is therefore forecast to remain unchanged in 2010.

PU Europe applauds the strong will of all those involved in the negotiations to reach an ambitious compromise on a complex matter within a short period of time. In particular, the European Parliament, led by rapporteur Silvia-Adriana Ticau, has shown real determination
throughout the process.
