In the framework of the Conference on the Future of Europe, citizens, social partners, civil society representatives and elected members from across Europe last night endorsed a roadmap to strengthening social justice, fair jobs and tax justice so that we emerge stronger from the current crises.
The president of the Socialists and Democrats in the European Parliament, Iratxe García Pérez, will be in Bucharest on Sunday and Monday and, together with the head of the S&D Romanian Delegation, Dan Nica MEP, will travel by road to the Republic of Moldova, where they will hold several meetings and visit a refugee centre.
Europe must not forget Afghanistan when the world’s attention is inevitably focused on the war against Ukraine. Today’s resolution on the situation of women’s rights in Afghanistan adopted by the European Parliament is a clear call on the Taliban to let Afghan girls have access to education and to put an end to the brutal oppression of women. The Ministry of Vice and Virtue reinstated by the Taliban has no place in today’s world, underline the Socialists and Democrats.
The Socialists and Democrats in the European Parliament voted in favour of a resolution, deploring the inertia in the implementation of the 2021-2027 Cohesion policy. The S&D Group supports crucial EU instruments like the Recovery and Resilience Facility and the React-EU which address the new challenges the EU faces, while it gives its continued support to the robust funds of the Cohesion policy.
The Socialists and Democrats in the European Parliament called for an effective right to repair for consumers in a plenary debate in Strasbourg today. They welcomed the European Commission’s intention to propose EU legislation on this matter. The S&D Group fully supports this idea – a real step forward that will save people money and will help the environment.
Biljana Borzan MEP, S&D vice-president for consumers and shadow rapporteur on the right to repair, said:
The German Government passed the so-called “Easter Package”, the most profound changes to German energy policy since the introduction of competitive auctions in 2017. By 2030 Germany aims for 80% renewables in total electricity consumption. Already from 2025 onwards Germany wants to install 10 GW of new onshore wind energy every year alone. To deliver this expansion in onshore wind the Government proposal increases annual auction volumes to up to 12 GW.
A shortage of labour has prompted the Belgian government and private sector to launch initiatives that help asylum seekers fill the ever-increasing job vacancies in the country.
The combined effort among federal agencies, private companies and non-profit organisations aims to match asylum seekers’ skills with employers’ needs as they wait for their asylum applications to be processed.
