In a single-line statement, the European Parliament is declaring the European Union an ‘LGBTIQ Freedom Zone’. This sentence captures the positive and inclusive message S&D MEPs sent to all LGBTI+ communities in the plenary debate earlier this afternoon.

Following the terrible attack in the Democratic Republic of Congo, which killed the Italian ambassador, Luca Attanasio, an Italian military policeman, Vittorio Iacovacci, and their driver Moustapha Milambo, the Socialists and Democrats Group has called on the European Parliament, in a resolution which will be voted on tomorrow, to condemn this killing and call for a thorough and independent inquiry. The too-cosy relations between the Congolese authorities and the armed groups can no longer be tolerated.

Today, during the plenary debate on the European Social Pillar, Social Democrats called for more ambition in the Commission’s Action Plan. They highlighted the window of opportunity for the Portuguese presidency of the EU to give a long-overdue impulse to Europe’s social dimension.

The approval today by the EU Parliament of the report ‘A WTO-compatible EU carbon border adjustment mechanism’ provides the Commission with important guidance in the EU's work towards our objective to make Europe climate neutral by 2050 at the latest. The Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) is an important mechanism, which, in the framework of the European Green Deal, will stimulate industry to invest in green solutions and will prevent unfair competition from outside the EU.

Today, the president of the European Parliament, David Sassoli, the president of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, and Portuguese Prime Minister Antonio Costa as the rotating presidency of the EU, signed the joint declaration that will finally allow the Conference on the Future of Europe to start on the 9th of May.
