Following the vote today in Plenary, the S&D Group welcomes the adoption of a joint resolution on the assessment of the impact of plant protection products on bees. The European Commission must now take into due consideration in its regulation the risks of chronic toxicity to bees and the effects on other pollinators.
 

EU 2020 Budget - highest EP stance ever on climate change and youth

Today, in Plenary, the S&D Group pushed for the highest ever EU budget, focused on our priorities. Adding up to 3 billion euros more to the initial draft budget proposed by the Commission is what we need in order to supplement crucial priorities such as the fight against climate change, Erasmus+, migration, development or the youth employment initiative. Undoubtedly, tough negotiations will follow on the suggested 3 billion euro increase. This is why S&D Group members call on EU member states to step up and take financial responsibility.

The AVIS project in Cameroon

After the successful first AVIS pilot project in Togo, the World Bank’s Global Road Safety Facility (GRSF) and CITA decided to renew their collaboration in Cameroon.
 
The AVIS (Assessment of Vehicle Inspection Systems) project has the overall objective of carrying out audits of vehicle inspection systems in different countries in sub-Saharan Africa – and this second study in Cameroon to make a diagnosis country’s PTI and registration system, along with a review of the structure in charge.

Last weekend Azerbaijani authorities violently dispersed peaceful rallies organised by the National Council of Democratic Forces (NCDF), an umbrella organisation of opposition parties, and civil society groups protesting against gender violence. Dozens of participants were detained, beaten and otherwise mistreated, including Ali Kerimli, the leader of the opposition People's Front.

In response to the increasingly urgent climate crisis, the European Commission is promoting several climate and energy targets with the goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions and decarbonising the economy. However, the current pace and scale of change is insufficient to achieve the necessary sustainability transitions in energy systems. Increasingly, households are seen as playing a role in energy transitions – which implies challenging social norms and habits around energy usage in the home.

S&D Group supports efforts by UK MPs to avoid a no-deal exit

In a special sitting today in the UK Parliament, MPs voted to ensure that the UK will not crash out of the EU without a deal, by supporting an amendment to withhold approval until the legislation for a deal is in place. Without a meaningful vote on the deal agreed by the EU and the UK earlier this week, extension of the UK's membership of the EU is now necessary.
