First anniversary of the EU’s signature of the Istanbul Convention: Member states must ratify it without further delay

On the first anniversary of the accession of the EU to the Istanbul Convention, the S&Ds are calling on member states to ratify it as soon as possible and to speed up the negotiations to allow the EU to ratify it as well. The Istanbul Convention is the most comprehensive international treaty and the first legally binding instrument on preventing and combating violence against women, including physical, psychological, and domestic violence.

After a very regrettable and irresponsible decision made by President Trump to pull-out the US from the Iran Nuclear Deal, the S&Ds called during today’s debate in the European Parliament to do whatever possible to keep this deal in place and protect the European companies from American sanctions. As Trump puts transatlantic relations under additional strain, the EU must stand firm and united, and defend the respect for international norms.

Socialists and Democrats welcome the very first meeting between the leader of North Korea Kim Jong-un and the US President Donald Trump that took place today in Singapore. We have always said that dialogue and diplomacy are the best instruments to defuse tensions and we support the efforts for the complete denuclearisation of North Korea and the peace treaty for the Korean Peninsula. Yet, whether this historical meeting will succeed and go beyond the photo-ops remains to be seen.
