General Electric: Stop destroying industrial and social capacities GE needs for long-term growth

In January 2016, following its acquisition of Alstom Power, General Electric targeted 6,500 European jobs to be cut. Victory for social rights as S&Ds lead drive to reject European Services e-card

Today the Socialists and Democrats scored a victory for social rights after having successfully led the drive to reject the Commission’s proposal for an e-card in a vote in the internal market committee. Aimed at making the cross-border provision of business and construction services easier and removing administrative burdens, the e-card would de facto establish the country of origin principle by undermining host-country control and enforcement tools, leading to more cross-border social fraud and dumping.

S&Ds warn that the increase in anti-vaccine movements poses a threat to public health

The increase of anti-vaccine movements, and vaccine-shortages in some European countries, poses a threat to the health of European citizens. The World Health Organisation (WHO) warns against the alarming return of preventable diseases, such as measles. Over 20,000 Europeans were affected by this disease last year, and 35 died, whereas there were only around 5,000 cases in 2016.
