The interpretation services in the European Parliament should be more cost effective. The Parliament could save millions of euros by using 'interpretation on demand' more often. Dutch MEP Esther de Lange proposed this in a report adopted today in the Budgetary Control Committee.

"Unnecessary use of interpretation services should be avoided, so as to maintain the high quality of Parliament's linguistic services. This is indispensable to fully guarantee the right of Members to express themselves in the language of their choice," she said.

eCall saves lives

CLEPA welcomes the two EC proposals, published yesterday, on automated emergency call for road accidents mandatory in cars from 2015, assuming the prompt availability of European satellite navigation services and related automotive components. The "eCall" system automatically dials 112 - Europe's single emergency number - in the event of a serious accident. It communicates the vehicle's location to emergency services, even if the driver is unconscious or unable to make a phone call. It is estimated that it could save up to 2500 lives a year.
