EP pledges to tackle problem of double taxation in the Single Market

Today the European Parliament adopted Olle Schmidt's (Folkpartiet, Sweden) report on tax that responds to the tax initiatives taken by the Commission in 2011 and on the areas where much more must be done to increase growth and boost Europe's competitiveness. In particular, the report focuses on removing cross-border tax obstacles for EU citizens and businesses, on preventing tax fraud, increasing tax transparency, as well proposing common principles, general guidelines concerning taxation and the need for further tax coordination where the EU can play a key role.

Food claims - EP rejects misleading food claims under EU rules

The European Parliament today voted to reject (1) a proposal from the EU Commission to allow misleading nutritional claims for food products. The Greens welcomed the rejection of the proposals, which would have allowed producers to claim reduced percentages of potentially unhealthy components (like fat, salt, sugar and saturated fat) compared to a previous version of the same product. The Commission will now have to come forward with a new proposal. Speaking after the vote, Swedish Green MEP Carl Schlyter said:

EU sabre-rattling on Iran to hit population, not regime

EU sanctions against Iran are politically naïve, negligent sabre-rattling according to GUE/NGL MEP Cornelia Ernst speaking ahead of today's European Parliament vote on a resolution on Iran's nuclear programme.

"We condemn the Iranian regime for its catastrophic human rights violations, repression of religious minorities and persecution of human rights activists but embargoing Iranian oil through the de-facto ban on trade with Iran's central bank ultimately just impacts the population."

Data retention (PNR) EU-US PNR agreement should be rejected by EP

The European Parliament is set to give its verdict on a proposed EU-US agreement on the retention of the private data of airline passengers (passenger name records or PNR). The EP draftsperson/rapporteur today presented a draft report recommending rejection of the agreement (1). The Greens support the call for rejecting the agreement, as there are real concerns that it runs counter to EU data protection rules and would undermine the fundamental rights of EU citizens. Speaking in favour of the proposed rejection, Green home affairs expert Jan Philipp Albrecht said:

Authoritarian regimes beware - the Eu will not help you launder your ill-gotten gains

The European Parliament will vote on a report on EU policy towards the leaders of authoritarian regimes on Thursday during its mini plenary session in Brussels.  The report has been timed to coincide with a European Commission and EEAS review of the EU's sanctions policy which has been requested by the Council of Ministers.

Sir Graham Watson (Liberal Democrat, United Kingdom), who drafted the report, sends a clear message to authoritarian regimes "The EU will not help you launder your ill-gotten gains."

EU democracy and solidarity sacrificed on the altar of financial markets

The adoption of the Fiscal Pact with its further extremes in cuts and austerity is an approach criticised even by the IMF, GUE/NGL President Lothar Bisky told the European Parliament this afternoon in the debate on the fiscal compact deal agreed Monday in Brussels.

"By accepting to sign up to the fiscal Treaty, the Heads of State and Government of 25 Member States have taken their responsibilities seriously and decided to tackle the budgetary complacency which is eating away at our economy", said the Chairman of the EPP Group during a debate on the outcome of the European Council of 30 January 2012.

EP Rapporteur In 't Veld set to reject new EU-US Passenger Name Records Agreement (PNR)

Sophie in 't Veld (D66, NL), will outline today her recommendation for the European Parliament to withhold consent on the EU-US PNR Agreement for which she is Parliament's rapporteur. The Agreement on the transfer of Passenger Name Records (PNR), signed by the Council in 2011, does not meet the criteria set by the European Parliament in its 2010 resolutions, and is not in line with EU legislation.

Corporate reports are being held back by confusion over their different audiences, their complexity, and lack of timeliness, according to a new ACCA (the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants) survey of annual report users ahead of the annual corporate reporting season.
