ETNO welcomes Council’s recognition of importance of current rules to ensure an open Internet

Brussels – In line with the Council’s conclusions on net neutrality adopted today, ETNO believes that significant economic gains can be achieved through an appropriate policy framework for ICT and that provisions of the existing regulatory framework are best placed to enable an open Internet.

Privacy and data protection - PNR Misguided home affairs ministers ignore concerns and give EU-US PNR thumbs-up

EU home affairs ministers today gave the go-ahead to a controversial agreement between the EU and the US on passenger data retention (PNR), with the deal now set to be considered by the European Parliament (1). On the same day, the European Data Protection Supervisor (EPDS) has outlined concerns with the agreement (2). Single permit: towards more coherent EU legislation on legal migration

Today Parliament approved measures to realise a single permit application for third country nationals to live and work in the EU without having to provide different sets of documentation for each EU Member State.

Single permit procedure a threat to migrant rights

Regretting Parliament's passing of the 'single permit' as a threat to migrants' rights, German GUE/NGL MEP Cornelia Ernst said the new rules create sub-categories of migrants and establish an unacceptable bind between work and residence permits.

"The single application procedure for residence and work permits unacceptably links the residence permit to employment and will not provide third country nationals with the same rights as European citizens."

European protection order a positive step towards tackling gender-based violence

Welcoming the broad political and institutional efforts by all parties in the drafting of a positive directive on the European protection order, Swedish GUE/NGL MEP and Chair of Parliament's Women's Rights and Gender Equality Committee, Mikael Gustafsson said the new provisions were "a further step towards a safer Europe for all citizens, but especially for women who make up a large majority of the victims".

Criminal rights - Greater cross-border rights during criminal proceedings, as MEPs endorse EU letter of rights

New EU rules strengthening the right to information of accused persons and suspects in criminal proceedings were today adopted by the European Parliament (1). The Greens welcomed the new rules, which will ensure suspects and accused persons are given information on their rights in a language they understand prior to any interview, as well as access to materials relating to the case. After the vote, Green home affairs spokesperson Jan Philipp Albrecht said:

ITER nuclear fusion - EP rubberstamps deal to pour more public funds into runaway ITER budget

The European Parliament today voted to approve an agreement between the EP and Council, under which €1.3 billion of the budget overrun for the ITER nuclear fusion project will be funded from the EU budget in 2012-13 (1). The Greens have hit out at the deal and believe no more public funds should be spent on ITER. Speaking after the vote, Green budgetary spokesperson Helga Trüpel said:

Banker rule must be broken or crisis will persist

"That the EU summit did not succeed in bringing about a breakthrough to solve the global financial crisis is beyond doubt," said GUE/NGL President Lothar Bisky responding to Commission and Council statements on the outcome of the 8-9 December summit.

"The much sought-after "trust" of the markets presupposes that markets are rational and ignores the greed for short-term profits as the key driving force of market activities", President Bisky explained.
